What is Matter

Matter is made up of elements which are substances made up of only one type of matter. Elements are the building blocks of matter. Each element is made up of atoms which are the smallest particles of an element.

  • A mixture is a combination of two or more types of matter in which each type retains its original chemical properties.
  • A solution is a special mixture that is blended completely. Orange juice with water is a solution.

The two methods of separating a mixture are filtration and evaporation. A filter separates things by size and comes in various sizes. Little particles pass through the holes in the filter while the large ones will be left behind. Evaporation is the change of a liquid to gas. Example is salt in water, where the water evaporates and the salt is left behind.

A compound forms when two or more elements are combined chemically. Examples of a compound are salt, sugar, and water.

An alloy is a mixture of two or more metals. It is more flexible or stronger than a single metal. An example is copper that makes gold jewelry stronger.
