Matter Investigation: Density

Materials

  • Disposable plastic cup
  • m&m chocolate candies
  • Warm water
  • Forceps

Procedures

  • Fill the cup 2/3 full with warm water
  • use the forceps to place two candies into the cup with the “m&m” logo facing up.
  • Observe

Conclusion

The candies are coated with an substance that keeps the candy from easily melting in your hands. This substance is made of oil. The density of oil is less than the density of water so, after this coating is released from the candy, it floats to the surface of the water.
