Combining Sentences

When you write several short sentences about a single topic, you should try to combine some of them. Two short sentences can often be easily combined into one larger sentence. This will make your sentences more interesting for others to read.

Compound Sentences

When you make a compound sentence you are joining two or more simple sentences together with a conjunction and a comma. If you took the conjunction away, the sentences would be complete and they would still make sense.

1. I collect model trains.
2. My dad collects old tools.
3. I collect model trains, and my dad collects old tools.

1. Mike walks to the store.
2. He walks home.
3. Mike walks to store, and he walks home.

1. We like to go to school.
2. We don’t like to do homework.
3. We like to go to school, but we don’t like to do homework.

When combining sentences, remember to use a comma before the conjunction (and – but – or).
