With the price of everything going up, it’s nice to know that you can still get something for nothing. Throughout the year I will periodically post information about free software for students and parents.

The first of these is a free alternative to the very expensive Microsoft Office Suite. This open source alternative, which is available for Windows and Mac, is called Open Office. It can be downloaded from: openoffice.org
Among other things, OpenOffice contains a powerful word processor, and a Power Point alternative. It is easy to learn, and if you’re already using another office software package, you’ll take to OpenOffice straight away. If you already have files from another office package – OpenOffice will likely read them with no difficulty.
The weekend your child brought home an Interim Report. This report shows your child’s current Science, Social Studies, Math and Language Arts grades. This information can also be seen on the Progress Book website.
Interims are not final grades. An interim report is merely a snapshot of a particular day within a nine-week term. Good or bad, these scores are not set in stone. There is still time to make a difference – in either direction.
As you review the scores, please keep in mind that grades are very fluid. One assignment or quiz at this point in the grading period can make massive changes to an overall score. As the grading period nears it’s close the grades will become more and more accurate.
